There is no other place where so many choirs meet.

In 1974 members of the Shanty-Chor Cuxhaven and the spa administration made an idea come true. They invited shanty-choirs from different towns to meet in Cuxhaven and sing shanties. Taking place in the Kurpark Döse this "world premiere" was then named Tag der Shanty-Chöre (Day of Shanty-Choirs) and was so extremely successful, that they decided to rerun this festival in the following year.

That was the beginning of a unique and extraordinary event. Since 1974 Cuxhaven has thus been an import location for shanty-choirs from both home and abroad every year. By the way, the most shanty-choirs come from Lower Saxony, followed by Schleswig-Holstein and Nordrhein-Westfalen. And even Bavaria has 15 shanty-choirs.

Here, you will find some highlights in history, taken from the programmes accompanying the event and of course from the anniversary publication of the 25th Tag der Shanty-Chöre. Browse in the decades as shown on the right side or in our gallery!.
